Processes pronunciation audio3/23/2023 ![]() That is why I have put some time into this. When I used it a while ago, a native English speaker from the US was not fond of it and used process-es afterwards. I have once learnt from a British university teacher of Business English that process-eez is right, long ago. Finally, it might also just improve the sound of e/i-ss-es endings. Generally, “eez” cases might just flag something special. “process-eez” might come from the rare plural long u “-us” ending of the Latin u-declension of “processus” (which is just an intransitive participle converted to a noun). Wrapping up in advance (due to the long text) Was tempted to hear it as ‘injusticies’, to make it less irritating.Īn American Dialect Society mailing list post from 1995 mentions premises and biases.Ī Meditec article “ Forming Plurals of Medical Words” says “an interesting evolutionary process is the English translation process of adding a mispronounced final syllable, “eez” as in “abscesses”, “interstices”, “processes”. Sister (can’t remember her name), talking about ‘little injusticeez’. ![]() I heard something like that about 10 years ago, from Ralph Nader’s Perhaps the reason is similar to the processeez/processuz difference.Ī Newsgroup Archive of an thread “ “processeez” - a history of mispronunciation and a prognosis, please” also has some useful information and interesting anecdotes: Most Americans pronounce the last syllable “LESS”, but I’ve found that many people from Britain pronounce it “LEEZ”. It reminds me of the way Los Angeles is pronounced. I don’t think I use it for lotuses, but I’m getting less and less certain. Now I know better I also use it for the word fetuses: feetusseez and I think I have heard this on CNN. Was easily convinced that it was an ideosyncracy of mine. Less than a week ago I was corrected by my wife for saying processseez and I’ve heardīiaseez, premiseez, promiseez, and a couple more. What’s interesting is that this neomorph is spreading. premises (the plural of premise/premiss often used in plural)Ī sci.lang thread “ Processeez or processuz” on Google Groups provides some further evidence about pronunciations like this:.There seems to be more limited evidence for this pronunciation of plural “-es” being used in the following words: Other possible words and further discussion I went through the 31 pronunciations of lattices indexed by Youglish and didn’t find any that had. Having an unstressed syllable before the /s/ seems to be a necessary but not sufficient condition for the irregular plural /siːz/ pronunciation to exist. It may be relevant that auspices and interstices are both words that are frequently plural. Interestingly, the OED records a 17th-century spelling variant “intersticies”, although it’s unclear to me if that could be related to the modern pronunciation with /i/ or /iː/. Interstices (the plural of interstice), according to the AHD you can also hear this pronunciation in many of the Youglish examples for this word. Other words like this: biases, auspices, intersticesĪltough processes is the most well-known word like this, there are at least three other nouns that would regularly be pronounced with /sɪz/ in the plural form, but that are apparently sometimes pronounced with /siz/ (or /siːz/):īiases (the plural of bias): mentioned by Mitch in a commentĪuspices (the plural of auspice), according to Merriam-Webster (the pronunciation with /si:z/ is regular for the homograph auspices that is used as the plural form of the rare word auspex) I haven’t heard of anyone pronouncing the third-person singular verb form processes with anything other than /sɪz/ or /səz/. Note that processes seems to only be pronounced with /siz/ or /siːz/ when it is a plural noun. The second edition of Webster’s New International Dictionary was published in 1934, so it would appear that the pronunciation of processes with a “long e” sound in the last syllable has been around for some time. Webster’s Second International lists it as a third-choice pronunciation.“ Analyzing and documenting our processeez“, by Conrad Weisert, 7 January 2010, says Although the pronunciation for process with a long (o), (prō ′sĕs′), is more usual in British and Canadian English, it is an acceptable variant in American English. However, because this pronunciation is not uncommon even in educated speech, it is generally considered an acceptable variant, although it still strikes some listeners as a bungled affectation. But process is not of Greek origin, and there is no etymological justification for this pronunciation of its plural. ![]() Usage Note: In recent decades there has been a tendency to pronounce the plural ending -es of processes as (-ēz), perhaps by analogy with words of Greek origin such as analysis and diagnosis. The online American Heritage Dictionary entry for process says:

Docker container startup time3/23/2023 Try running the ls command to see the list of files: ls -al total 56 drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4096 Feb 22 14:22. Once the image is downloaded, Docker runs the image, executing the bash command, which starts an interactive Bash prompt, where you can type. However, it’s also possible to create private Docker images which only certain authenticated users can use. The ubuntu:20.04 image happens to be a public Docker image - an official one maintained by the Docker team - so you’re able to download it without any authentication. If you don’t have that image downloaded already, Docker downloads it automatically from Docker Hub, which is a Docker Registry that contains shared Docker images. How did this happen? Well, first, Docker searches your local file system for the ubuntu:20.04 image. For example, you can look at the contents of /etc/os-release to verify you really are in Ubuntu: cat /etc/os-release NAME="Ubuntu" VERSION="20.04.3 LTS (Focal Fossa)" ID=ubuntu ID_LIKE=debian PRETTY_NAME="Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS" VERSION_ID="20.04" VERSION_CODENAME=focal For example, here’s how you can run a Bash shell in an Ubuntu 20.04 Docker image (note the command below includes the -it flag so you get an interactive shell where you can type): $ docker run -it ubuntu:20.04 bash Unable to find image ‘ubuntu:20.04’ locally 20.04: Pulling from library/ubuntu Digest: sha256:669e010b58baf5beb2836b253c1fd5768333f0d1dbcb83 (.) Status: Downloaded newer image for ubuntu:20.04 voilà, you’re now in Ubuntu! If you’ve never used Docker before, this can seem fairly magical. Where IMAGE is the Docker image to run and COMMAND is an optional command to execute. ![]() You can run Docker images locally using the docker run command, which has the following syntax: $ docker run Once it’s installed, you should have the docker command available on your command line. Let’s get started! Run a Docker containerįirst, if you don’t have Docker installed already, follow the instructions on the Docker website to install Docker Desktop for your operating system. So it’s well worth your time to learn how to use it. VMs (left) virtualize the hardware, whereas containers (right) virtualize only user space.īecause of its portability and minimal overhead, Docker has become one of the most popular ways to package and deploy apps (you’ll see an example of using Kubernetes to deploy Dockerized apps in part 2 of this series). Since all the containers running on a single server share that server’s OS kernel and hardware, containers can boot up in milliseconds and have little CPU or memory overhead. With Docker, you package your software into a Docker image, which is a self-contained snapshot that includes a file system with your code and your code’s dependencies, and you run that image as a container by using a container engine (e.g., Docker engine), which virtualizes the user space (processes, memory, mount points, and networking see user space vs kernel space) of your operating system, isolating your code from the host machine and any other containers, and ensuring your code will run the same way in all environments (your computer, a QA server, a production server, etc.). One drawback with VMs is that virtualizing all the hardware and running a totally separate OS for each VM image incurs a lot of overhead in terms of CPU usage, memory usage, and startup time. With a VM, you package your code into a VM image, which is a self-contained “snapshot” that includes an operating system and a file system with your code and all of your code’s dependencies, and you run that image on top of a hypervisor (e.g., VMWare, VirtualBox) which virtualizes all the hardware (CPU, memory, hard drive, and networking), isolating your code from the host machine and any other VM images, and ensuring your code will run the same way in all environments (e.g., your computer, a QA server, a production server). If you want to go deeper, there are also links at the end of the post to more advanced resources.ĭocker offers a way to package and run your code so that it is portable: that is, so that you can run that code just about anywhere-your own computer, a QA server, a production server-and be confident that it will always run exactly the same way.īefore Docker came along, it was common to use virtual machines (VMs) to package and run code. This course is designed for newbies, starting at zero, and building your mental model step-by-step through simple examples you run on your computer to do something useful with Docker - in minutes. This post will teach you Docker basics by going through a lightning quick crash course where you learn by doing. ![]() ![]() This is part 1 of the Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and AWS crash course series.

Loop hero town3/23/2023 ![]() Fitting that it made RPS's list of top 14 games in March to look forward to. "In particular, it nicely captures why dungeon crawlers still resonate after all these years - the feeling of discovery as you build out the map, the sense of danger as you weigh the benefits and drawbacks of one more run, the satisfaction of building your hero into a juggernaut in real time." "It’s a very clever mash-up, managing to evoke all the memories of classic RPGs with a simple and very tight setup," she says. If you've not yet hopped on the loop, Kat Bailey has explained how it taps into deep RPG history. If you’re playing Loop Hero and noticed someone online has a card named Suburbs, we’ve got a guide for you. I suspect some of you who've been playing Loop Hero likely have your own adiditonal class wishlists though. I appreciate that instead of a standard elemental mage as its third main class, Loop Hero already has my personal favorite the Necromancer. But whoa, whats this Its 11:00 AM, our heroes are alive again, and Refuge definitely hasnt just been exploded. As for new classes, more options are always fun too. When the town clock strikes noon, Refuge and its citizens are destroyed in a sudden chaos of flame and ruin, and our heroes relic hunting-along with their lives-comes to an abrupt end. The ability to save during expeditions is one of those modern conveniences that sounds particularly nice. "After that, you can expect to see lots more content added to the game, such as new cards, transformations, classes and new music." If they manage to successfully overcome your obstacle course, can invest your earned loot into your campsite to make them stronger for the next generated loop.Īs for those updates, "next up, we're working on patches with quality-of-life updates you all asked for, including a system for saving during expeditions, new speed settings, and a deck of traits gained from bosses," Four Quarters say. Your deck includes cards such as monsters, buildings, and terrain that you'll place along the path for your hero to encounter. If you're not familiar, Loop Hero is a mixture of deck building and auto battling and dungeon crawling. They're planning some quality of life changes to start with, and bigger changes like new classes down the line. The River for doubling the effects of other land tiles. If you can get the River first, you can skip this building for now. Use the Alchemist’s Tent to convert resources for what you need. Loop Hero is a new deck-building, rogue-lite RPG that got released on PC a couple weeks ago, and was developed by Four Quarters Team and published by Devolver Digital. The Library is mainly a step to getting the Alchemist’s Tent. Along with celebrating that success, they've revealed some of their plans to boost the loop with additional features. The Forest is a nice boost in attack speed via land tiles. Deck building and dungeon crawling mashup Loop Hero has sold 500,000 copies in its first week, developers Four Quarters have announced.

Divide and conquer tyler tx3/22/2023 ![]() In the early 20th century, the Chinese writer and reformer Liang Qichao theorized that the text was actually written in the 4th century BC by Sun Tzu's purported descendant Sun Bin, as a number of historical sources mention a military treatise he wrote. ![]() The name "Sun Wu" ( 孫武) does not appear in any text prior to the Records of the Grand Historian, and has been suspected to be a made-up descriptive cognomen meaning "the fugitive warrior", glossing the surname "Sun" as the related term "fugitive" ( xùn 遜), while "Wu" is the ancient Chinese virtue of "martial, valiant" ( wǔ 武), which corresponds to Sunzi's role as the hero's doppelgänger in the story of Wu Zixu. Authorship īeginning around the 12th century, some Chinese scholars began to doubt the historical existence of Sun Tzu, primarily on the grounds that he is not mentioned in the historical classic The Commentary of Zuo ( Zuo Zhuan), which mentions most of the notable figures from the Spring and Autumn period. The Art of War appears throughout the bibliographical catalogs of the Chinese dynastic histories, but listings of its divisions and size varied widely. Cao's preface makes clear that he edited the text and removed certain passages, but the extent of his changes were unclear historically. The strategist, poet, and warlord Cao Cao in the early 3rd century AD authored the earliest known commentary to the Art of War. The conventional view was that Sun Wu was a military theorist from the end of the Spring and Autumn period (776–471 BC) who fled his home state of Qi to the southeastern kingdom of Wu, where he is said to have impressed the king with his ability to quickly train even court women in military discipline and to have made Wu's armies powerful enough to challenge their western rivals in the state of Chu. This text was traditionally identified with the received Master Sun's Art of War. Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian, the first of China's 24 dynastic histories, records an early Chinese tradition that a text on military matters was written by one "Sun Wu" ( 孫武) from the State of Qi, and that this text had been read and studied by King Helü of Wu ( r. 514 BC – 495 BC). Sun Tzu was traditionally said to have lived in the 6th century BC, but The Art of War 's earliest parts probably date to at least 100 years later. ![]() ![]() The Art of War is traditionally attributed to an ancient Chinese military general known as Sun Tzu (now Romanized "Sunzi") meaning "Master Sun". are all cited as having drawn inspiration from the book. Military and political leaders such as the Chinese communist revolutionary Mao Zedong, Japanese daimyō Takeda Shingen, Vietnamese general Võ Nguyên Giáp, and American military generals Douglas MacArthur and Norman Schwarzkopf Jr. The first annotated English translation was completed and published by Lionel Giles in 1910. A partial translation into English was attempted by British officer Everard Ferguson Calthrop in 1905 under the title The Book of War. The book was translated into French and published in 1772 (re-published in 1782) by the French Jesuit Jean Joseph Marie Amiot. Considered one of history's finest military tacticians and analysts, his teachings and strategies formed the basis of advanced military training for millennia to come. Sun also stressed the importance of intelligence operatives and espionage to the war effort. The book contains a detailed explanation and analysis of the 5th-century BC Chinese military, from weapons, environmental conditions, and strategy to rank and discipline. The Art of War remains the most influential strategy text in East Asian warfare and has influenced both Far Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, legal strategy, politics, sports, lifestyles and beyond. For almost 1,500 years it was the lead text in an anthology that was formalized as the Seven Military Classics by Emperor Shenzong of Song in 1080. Each one is devoted to a different set of skills or art related to warfare and how it applies to military strategy and tactics. The work, which is attributed to the ancient Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu ("Master Sun"), is composed of 13 chapters. 'Sun Tzu's Military Method') is an ancient Chinese military treatise dating from the Late Spring and Autumn Period (roughly 5th century BC).

Example of aha moment3/22/2023 What DID they really need from me? How could I make them understand the difference between fiscal and monetary policy, at its most basic level, without whipping myself into a frenzy drawing charts on the board trying to impress them with my skills? Once I realized that I was there to serve them completely with everything I had to offer, I could really begin to teach. Once I let myself off the hook, I was really able to be PRESENT to them. Whether I presented the content flawlessly or clumsily was moot if they did not learn a few things after that class. They were there to learn, and to get the highest grade they were capable of. But then I had an ‘aha’ moment when I realized these kids could give a darn about my presenting skills. In my first few classes, I left dejected when I felt I didn’t do a good job “presenting” the information. One of my biggest concerns coming into teaching this course was not being able to be the dynamic presenter I know I can be. It’s not about me, it’s all about them. Here are 3 of the biggest lessons I have gleaned thus far. So I’m learning and growing and evolving as a teacher. It is my job, not theirs to keep them engaged or in the very least, entertained. I keep striving to be a better communicator. I’ve spoken successfully to professional audiences in the past, and in my career as a market researcher, I had to give presentations and chair meetings that were way longer, myriad times. I never thought it would be so difficult to command 80 minutes of attention. They’re my captive audience-that is, when they are not glued to their cell phone or otherwise engaged. Getting in front of a classroom of twenty 17-20-something year-old kids first thing in the morning is nothing, if not a humbling experience. What An Experience! I’m learning SO much-about how to teach, how to communicate more clearly, about my students, but most of all about myself. ![]() I am almost through with my first semester of teaching Introduction to Business to a group of mostly college freshmen. |
