Best sibelius symphony3/24/2023 ![]() The recording producer/engineer, Brian Culverhouse gives all this a big fjord-laden sound-scape. It has the best "big tune" (employed by Hollywood for the film 'The High and The Mighty'), and the Finns play it with nationalistic pride that's make the hair on your hair stand up while you feel the northern latitude chill. Jukka-Pekka Saraste and the Finnish Radio Orchestra on RCA. I'm going to suggest two conductors for your collection. I truly envy those who get to experience Sibelius with fresh ears. If you want to go value pricing, the Colin Davis Boston Cycle on Philips is more than adequate. Symphony 7: Maazel or Segerstam (A truly majestic and innovative work) Symphony 5: Vanska or Karajan (I'm not a Karajan fan but he was good with this symphony) Symphony 4: Segerstam or Berglund (one of the most desolate symphonies written) Symphony 3: Ashkenazy or Segerstam (a very under rated symphony - I love it) Symphony 2: Szell ( for excitment) or Barbirolli (grandeur) Symphony 1: Ashkenazy or Blomstedt (symphony has shades of Tchaikovsky) If you want to go the individual CD route, I like the following: ![]() While they command wonderful orchestras, I think they over romanticize the works. My favorite cycles are probably Blomstedt/San Francisco on London, Vanska/Lahti on BIS and Segerstam/Helsinki on Ondine. While 2 and 5 are the most popular, all are very worthwhile listening to. His sound world is very unique - you can almost feel the cold Finnish winters while listening. Sibelius is my favorite 20th century composer.
